The metaphysical implications of the immune system are so obvious that they are often overlooked. The immune system is the defense of the body. It is the intricate network of players with unusual names like T-cells (both T-4’s and T-8’s), fighter cells, helper cells, and antibodies that roam the body via the bloodstream in search of any alien energy from which the body needs defense. It is the system that protects you from invasion – it is the system that protects you from being a victim of “the world out there,” of the unknown.
The immune system corresponds to your level of self-confidence. Self-confidence is your ability to cope with the world. Confidence is composed of trust and humility entwined with hope and courage.
Trust begins with listening to the whispers of your body, your mind (intellect), your heart (feelings), and your intuition. To listen, yes. But trust is more than just listening. It is creating a synergy – a whole that is greater than the sum of the parts – creating a synergy of these various messages. It is not just responding to the nervous stomach or sweaty palm. It is not just listening to the rambles of logic, the flow of feelings, or the flash of insight feebly or profoundly called “knowing.” It is combining all of these and mixing well to create a whole that is somehow more. That whole is trust.
Humility is the ability and the willingness to see each day as new. Even though something has always been “this way,” today it could be different. Even though the boss has always been a certain way, today, the boss could be different. Being humble is never taking a situation or a person for granted. It is a willingness to see the freshness of each moment. When you trust yourself, really trust yourself, not just say the words, it is easy to be humble. When you openly develop humility there is room to trust.
Hope is not the blind faith of the traditional or fundamental past. Hope is a willingness to see, in the scattered energy of the present, the dreams and the treasures of the future. It is an ability to sort through the actuality of today and pick out the pieces of probability and possibility for tomorrow.
Courage is the willingness to find solutions – elegant solutions – to fears, doubts, and confusions. It is a determination to find solutions when the consensus reality says there are no more solutions left. The courageous person knows they create their own reality and acts upon that knowledge.
When trust and humility are denied, when hope and courage are broken, there is a breach of confidence – there is a breach in your ability to cope in your exterior world. The immune system reflects that breach in your ability to cope with your internal world. Globally, there has been a breach of confidence and now your world reflects that breach with a rash of immune deficiency diseases – AIDS is only one such “syndrome.”
The immune system also corresponds to your level of defenselessness and, conversely, your level of defensiveness. If a person feels totally defenseless in their personal world or global world they are running a risk of developing a self-attaching deadly disease (an immune deficiency disease – a defense system deficiency disease). For the defenseless there is no hope, no help, no possible future – there are no dreams.
The defensive person, at first glance, seems to be the total opposite from the helpless one. They do not need anyone. They can do it all themselves. That they will not take help does not mean they do not need help. They are filled with the same fears, doubts and confusions as the defenseless. They feel the same hollow and haunting pain of hopelessness – otherwise they would not need to be so defensive. They shut people out, because they do not want anyone to see the pain. That does not mean they do not feel it.
Sometimes the level of defenselessness/defensiveness is so deep that the only way out is to die. To some, it is the only hope and the only answer. The method of defense has turned against the person. The method of defense is destroying them. This is exactly what the numerous immune deficiency syndromes are doing.
The level of persistent self-pity also is reflected by the immune system. Physiologically, the immune system is the system that keeps you from being a victim of the world and the unknown. However, if emotionally you insist/persist in being a victim or a martyr despite the alternatives – even when “you know better’ – your immune system may reflect your stubbornness.
Does this mean that if you lack confidence or are either defenseless or defensive or are pitying yourself that you are doomed? NO! NO! NO! Neither does it mean that self-confidence, openness, and lack of pity guarantee safety. Each person creates and listens to the whispers differently.
So many are quick to look at the rash of immune deficiency diseases as God’s punishment, or as an out-growth of the ugliness of the Human Condition, or as a hocus-pocus evilness. These immature responses are not only bogus, but further symptoms of the denied trust and humility, of the broken hope and courage.
They are another form of the breach of confidence, and the epidemic rise of defenseless/defensive reactions to a world fewer are able and willing to understand. These fear responses to real concerns only further the very self-pity that is at the core of the problem. Not only are these kinds of explanations bogus, they are damaging because they foster the problem – they fan the flames of panic.
If you want to find a solution to the attack on the Human Immune System, as well as a solution for the people who you know who are dying, begin by looking at your self-confidence, your openness, and your willingness to walk away from the seduction of self-pity. Then look beyond yourself to the world which is also your creation and your responsibility.
There are many immune-balancing chemicals and diets and exercise regimes that are increasingly available.
Some are wonderful; some are not. Building your immune system – building the Human Immune System – begins with building a personal self-confidence. It begins with developing trust, humility, hope and courage to be fully who you are and who you can be. It begins with dropping your defenselessness or defensiveness and replacing it with the strength and power of vulnerability. It begins with walking away from the addiction of self-pity. It’s time. Your world is telling you. Your body is telling you. It’s time.
